Chemistry C343

Announcements (will be added as they are made):

  1. Exam 2, during finals week, will cover the last experiments: elimination, hydration, Diels-Alder, Grignard, and electrophilic aromatic substitution; and proton NMR and MS.  Although carbon NMR and IR data may be given to you to help you answer the questions, the data will primarily focus on 1H NMR and MS.  You will still be expected to know the techniques of IR and 13C NMR to answer the questions, so reviewing the prominent signals would be smart.  The end of the class is coming up pretty quickly so please start preparing now!

  2. Lab AI evaluations will be done in lab during drawer checkout in the computer lab, C046 or C006. Lectures instructor evaluations will be online and found on CALM be looking on the lefthand tool bar when you check your grades in CALM.  Please fill out evaluations for Professor Reck durings weeks 14-15 starting Novermber 29 at midnight until Saturday, December 12 at midnight.   Paper evaluations are always an option if you do not want to do these online.  MORE WILL BE EXPLAINED IN CLASS.
  3. Nitration Worksheet is due during checkout week.

  4. Mass Spectrometry Worksheet will be due on December 4 by 4 pm to the Chemistry Undergraduate Office, Chemistry 021, unless you want more time and do not mind handing in an assignment in week 15 on December 10 in class like normal.  Since we will not be done covering the material, I don't know how to have your seriosuly get all the lectures and hand in the WS in week 14.  It is entirely up to you if you want to work from the book and hand the assignment in after break.  You can certainly figure it out from teh textbook if you have initiative.

  5. Quiz 4 wlil be on December 3 relating to the following experiments: elimination, hydration, Diels-Alder, and Grignard.  No spectroscopy will be on this quiz.

  6. Quiz 3 will be on November 5, covering proton NMR.  It will be on basic NMR problems and not on splitting diagrams like alkenes with different coupling constants.  I need to test you on the bascis first before you are tested on the harder problems.
  7. 1H NMR Worksheet has been posted.  Please notice is is due on November 19 in class.
  8. Exam 1 will be on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in the evening from 7:15-9:15 pm.  Content will include IR spectroscopy, carbon-13, and the first five labs: distillation, TLC/CC, extraction/recrystallization, reduction and oxidation labs.  NO PROTON NMR WILL BE ON THE EXAM.  If you need to sign up for an early exam, please do so in the Chemistry Undergraduate Office by the end of Monday, October 19 at 5 pm. Students with last names that begin with A-O are assigned to Chemistry C122, students with last names that begin with P-V are assigned to Education 1120, and students with last names that begin with W-Z are assigned to Ballantine 242.
  9. Quiz 2 will be on Thursday, October 8 on the first three labs: distillation, TLC/CC and extraction and recrystallization.
  10. Quiz 1 will be on Thursday, October 1 on IR Spectroscopy.
  11. Reduction lab will now be a worksheet since not everyone has gotten their first lab report back.
  12. Office hours go back to regular in week 4 (MW 9:30-10:30 am).  I will no longer be teaching the C101 class this semester.
  13. Prelabs will be done on paper for the rest of the semester.  They can be found on the lectures notes page, and they are due in lab when you enter.
  14. On Monday, 9/7/09 and 9/14/09, I will be 30 minutes late to office hours because I need to teach someone else's lecture from 9:05-9:55 am in BH 221.  I will be over to C046 as soon as class is over.
  15. Make sure you download ChemDraw at http://iuware.iu.edu/title.aspx?id=979 to use during this class.  They will send you an email that will have the registration codes and serial number that will allow you to finish the download.  BE SURE THAT FOLLOW TH DIRECTIONS AND THAT YOU ARE USING AN INDIANA.EDU ACCOUNT OR ELSE IT WILL NOT WORK.  For further help, click here.
  16. Lab reports or summaries are due in lab one week after they are completed.  They must be uploaded on TII and handed in as a hard copy to your AI at the beginning of lab.  Information on lab reports and summary guidelines can be found on the lecture notes page.
  17. Free Radical Halogenation Lab report is due in week 3 in lab and online in TII.
  18. Register for Turnitin.com (TII) ASAP.  Directions are found on the lectures notes page
  19. Prelabs are due on Wednesdays at midnight of the week that lab is being done.
  20. Welcome to C343 for Fall 2009.  LABS MEET IN WEEK 1 BECAUSE YOU NEED TO CHECK INTO YOUR LAB DRAWERS.  Wet labs start in week 2.
